We'd like to load remote file types such as FLV and WMV, how can this be accomplished with jVideoDirect?

Well, flv is ok but not sure about WMV. You should check if the player used support WMV.

How do I go about testing it? When I try to load the URL I get an error about file type.

you can search longtailvideo.com for jwplayer.
or you can just import it and see if it works.
